The Juilliard School

In anticipation of the school’s new live streaming platform, Juilliard chose Sondhus to renovate it's main recording facility in late 2022. Sondhus managed the full scope of the renovation including design, electrical, HVAC, workflow, and acoustical concerns. A large 6’x10’ window was opened between the live and control rooms which frames the grand live room beyond and allows for unobstructed views between musicians and engineers. We developed a custom acoustic millwork design to diffuse the reverberation of the room and randomize (scatter) sound reflections in order to create a higher density in the character of the room’s decay. The verticality of the scatter system adds to the cathedral-like feeling of space, and draws attention to the acoustical ceiling forms hung from above which draw inspiration from the DS+R's 2007 exterior renovation of Alice Tully Hall next door. A new Lawo digital mixing console was installed in custom control room furniture which acts as a part of the school’s central core for all audio and video.
